Hi everyone! Today I’m going to be reviewing You’ll Be The Death Of Me by Karen McManus.
Rating: ✯✯✯✯✯
You’ll Be The Death Of Me follows the old childhood friends, Ivy, Cal, and Mateo, when they bump into each other in a school parking lot and decide to skip school. Things are seeming like a bit of a bust until they follow their classmate, Boney, into an abandoned warehouse… Only to stumble across his body.
There were so many things about this book that I loved; it’s definitely up there with my Karen McManus favourites. After both One Of Us Is Next and The Cousins I was wondering if I’d love anything of hers just as much as One Of Us Is Lying… And then I tried this, which I was pleasantly surprised by! As much as I liked her more recent releases this one just stood out to me and I felt it had the same magic as One Of Us Is Lying… I even read it in a day!
One of my favourite things about You’ll Be The Death Of Me would definitely have to be the lovely bond the trio shared. Despite not having spoken in a long time, the familiarity was still there and I loved the way they all worked together and complemented each other to solve the mystery. They clearly cared a lot about each other (even if they all did make some mistakes) and I loved that, when it came down to it, they all stood by each other.
I think my favourite friendship, though, would definitely have to be Ivy and Cal’s. Despite their differences in personality, they were incredibly close, and I loved the almost sibling relationship they shared. The conversation between them was always so natural and it was lovely to read!
Of course, the main relationship was also super cute. The history between the two combined with their chemistry made it impossible not to root for them, and I was relieved at their happy ending. They definitely brought out a new and better side of each other, and there were some really lovely moments shared between the two!
I also really loved the character development. This is a recurring theme with McManus’ books, and it was great to see that You’ll Be The Death Of Me was no exception! By the end of the book, Ivy, Cal, and Mateo had all matured a lot and improved as people, which was brilliant. I think Ivy’s stood out to me in particular – she was a little selfish at the beginning but by the end I felt she was a lot better, which was great to see.
Of course, part of this was due to all of their secrets coming out. As I’ve come to expect from McManus, You’ll Be The Death Of Me was filled to the brim with secrets, with each one bigger and more dramatic than the last. It definitely ensured that things were kept interesting and that there was never a dull moment in the side – and made for a lot of drama!
The twist was also incredible. I definitely didn’t see it coming, and was left reeling by the big reveal – the culprit was someone I hadn’t even considered! That being said, I think that’s a great sign for a mystery, and a real sign of McManus’s talent. I loved every second of the reveal, and it’s safe to say that things were incredibly tense!
Speaking of the big reveal… I think it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most action packed ones I’ve read in a while! There was definitely a moment there where I was questioning what turn things were going to take, but overall I was happy with how things panned out…
Apart from that cliffhanger ending! It was honestly the last thing I was expecting, and it was great to see McManus get that final twist in. I already want to know what’s going to happen next, and I can only hope that it was setting up for a sequel… I don’t think I’ll be able to bear it if that’s how things end!
Overall, I would definitely recommend You’ll Be The Death Of Me to any fan of mysteries and thrillers, as this was a really great one! I would also recommend it to anyone just generally looking for an amazing new read, as I really enjoyed this.
However, please be mindful that this book has a lot of trigger warnings – drug use and dealing, death, student/teacher relationship and murder – so please do not read if you’re uncomfortable with any of those topics.
Have you read You’ll Be The Death Of Me yet? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments!
I hope you enjoyed this review!

It’s always so agonising when there’s a cliffhanger ending and you don’t know if the author plans a sequel! I hope so, because this was a great review and I’m very intrigued now 🙂

Great review! We read You’ll Be The Death of Me a few weeks ago and found it quite captivating. Is it better than One of Us is Lying or The Cousins? No, but it certainly has a good story.

Hi, sounds pretty interesting though reading about murders
is not my favourite stuff. The story of friendship smooths the novel up..
