Today Tonight Tomorrow Book Review

Hi everyone! Today I’m going to be reviewing Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Soloman.

Today Tonight Tomorrow explores the protagonists’, Rowan and Neil’s, last night of senior year. Rowan and Neil have always been rivals – but after finding out people are out to get them in this year’s Howl game (which takes the students all across the city) they reluctantly team up. To Rowan’s surprise, the two actually get along – but once the night is over things will go back to normal… Right?

I think one of the things which really made this book stand out was definitely the Howl game. The students were all given prompts (eg. best view of the city) and had to travel across Chicago and find them, in order to win. It was a really interesting concept and, as someone who’s never visited the city before, I felt like I really got to know the city. It was a really clever way to incorporate the storyline with the vibrant setting of Chicago, and I really appreciated the inclusion of it.

I also really appreciated the protagonists being Jewish. There are not nearly enough books featuring Jewish characters, let alone main characters – I think pretty much all of the other books I’ve read with Jewish characters have been set during WW2 – so it was really nice to read this, especially as someone who doesn’t follow the tradition. It was lovely reading about the way Rowan and Neil bonded over this shared interest and I loved all the Jewish references!

Speaking of Rowan and Neil… Their romance was absolutely adorable. I really enjoyed reading about the development of their relationship through such a short timespan, and I honestly melted at the ending! The two shared so many cute moments together and it was impossible not to ship them… I was waiting for them to realise they belonged together for what felt like forever! I think it’s safe to say I was relieved when they finally did, although it would’ve been nice to see them together afterwards.

Of course, it wasn’t just the romance that was great – there were also the friendships! The bond Rowan and her friends shared was absolutely lovely and I also really loved that Solomon showed a different side to it – as well as the high moments she also explored the difficulties the trio faced, which definitely made things a lot more relatable and realistic. I really enjoyed the friendships in this book and I think they were some of the best I’ve read in a while!

The character development was also superb. Rowan’s in particular really stood out to me – she came such a long way from the girl at the beginning in such a short space of time, which was great to read. Reading her grow in confidence as well as realising some of her mistakes was really refreshing, and I really enjoyed reading her mature and develop.

Rowan in general was just a really likeable character. I found so much of myself in her and I really enjoyed reading about a character who was so similar to me. I loved her aspirations of becoming a writer as well as her struggles with opening up to her peers about her work – that definitely resonated with me on a personal level (regular readers of my blog will know I’d like to study Creative Writing at university next year). It was a really lovely inclusion on Solomon’s part and I really appreciated it.

Of course, I can’t finish a review for Today Tonight Tomorrow without mentioning the enemies to lovers aspect! Although it was nowhere near as heavy as other books (more like a rivals to lovies) it was executed brilliantly and I really enjoyed it. Reading the different stages of their relationship was definitely one of my favourite parts!

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone looking for an adorable contemporary with some really likeable and relatable characters. I would also recommend it for any fan of the enemies to lovers trope, as that was definitely a really strong theme in this!
