Hi everyone! Today I’m going to be reviewing Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon.
Rating: ✯✯✯✯
Everything, Everything follows our protagonist, Maddy, who is allergic to the world and can not go outside. Her life is entirely predictable until a new family with a teenage son moves in next door, who Maddy is immediately drawn to. The two soon strike up a connection, and Maddy finds herself wondering how far she is willing to go for love.
Everything, Everything was such a great read. I whizzed through the book in a matter of hours, which was largely due to how easy and accessible the language was. I really loved the vast majority of the book, but I personally enjoyed it less than The Sun Is Also A Star and Instructions For Dancing. Despite this, Everything, Everything was a really amazing debut!
Of course, the main thing I enjoyed about this book was the romance. Maddy and Olly really complemented each other, and I found myself rooting for them throughout. I really enjoyed watching the development of their relationship, and how it escalated from emails and texts through to carefully monitored meetings and trips. They were so cute together and I really enjoyed watching their relationship play out, and all the great moments they shared.
Of course, the romance made up a huge chunk of the book. The major theme of Everything, Everything was about the risks we take for love, and the potential cost of it. I thought this was a really great inclusion on Yoon’s part because it made me wonder what I would do in Maddy’s position, and contemplate my stance on love and the risks which can sometimes be involved.
Family also played a relatively big part in this book. I loved Maddy and her mum’s relationship (particularly at the beginning), and it was great to see how close they were. Despite their difficulties, they always managed to make up, which was so lovely to read.
I also really admired Maddy’s character. I thought her actions were incredibly brave and courageous and I loved seeing her progress and development. She was definitely a really well rounded character, and she also had her fair share of flaws, which I really appreciated – some of her actions were actually quite selfish. I really loved that Yoon added some negative aspects of her personality in addition to the more positive ones as it definitely made it that much more realistic.
Another aspect I loved was definitely the travelling aspect. Almost any book with travel or holiday aspects is an instant TBR for me and, although it wasn’t the major focus, this one didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed the different adventures the characters had when they went to Hawaii, and I thought it was such a cool inclusion of Yoon’s – it definitely made me want to visit and have those same amazing experiences!
Of course, I can’t forget about all the different chapter formats. In addition to the regular written chapters, there were also a wide variety of different ones, for instance the messages, drawings and notes. It definitely added to my engagement as I would never know what to expect when I started a new chapter and they were just generally really enjoyable to read. I’d definitely love to see more books with this interesting feature!
I also really loved the chapter titles. Personally I think that chapter titles are a must in any book as they really add to my interest and engagement. It was so lovely to see all the different titles and it also helped me to see where the book was going, which I really appreciated! I really think that more books should actually have written titles rather than the usual numbered ones, as they make a book that much more enjoyable.
Of course, I also have to mention the ending. I think the ending in this book was absolutely perfect and I truly loved it! It was such a cute way to wrap up the book and it tied it all up really nicely, which was lovely to see. I think Yoon is definitely super talented with her books and her endings all demonstrate that – they all add that little extra something and leave you that much more satisfied!
However, that’s not to say that I loved absolutely everything about this book. I think the main thing which irked me was the twist, which was quite weird and didn’t really make much sense. Although I hadn’t seen it coming, I still wasn’t particularly a fan of it, and I almost felt like it was just there for the sake of it being there and a happy ending.
Overall, though, I would recommend Everything, Everything to any fan of contemporary. Nicola Yoon is definitely one of the best YA contemporary authors I’ve read, and each of her books are perfection! I would also recommend it for anyone searching for a wonderful romance which combines so many different elements – there were so many different great aspects to this wonderful book!
I hope you enjoyed this review!

I love books that use different text types to tell the story. It keeps the structure interesting, and works really well for YA novels. Is this one a movie? I’m sure I’d heard of the story before, but not sure how.

I’ve not heard of Everything, Everything before. It sounds like an interesting read from what you’ve described. The characters sound like they would be fun to read about, especially the relationship between Maddy & Olly. Although you’ve said the twist wasn’t really fitting into the story and didn’t make sense, I want to know what it is lol

That book is good that once you pick, put it down only when you finish it. It does seem like a light read and a good one. The cautious behavior of how far to go through reach for someone is something majority of us relate to. Also the travel aspect opens your soul. Great review written. Xx

This was the first book that I read by Nicola Yoon and it’s an absolute winner, in my eyes. I loved the unique story and the way it was written. I listened to the audiobook the first time I read it and I know I didn’t get a chance to see the format come to life, so I purchased a physical copy of it last year and I just love the way it’s laid out! It’s still such a favorite of mine. I think that everything Nicola writes is just pure gold! I’m glad you enjoyed it for the most part 🙂
